PROGRAM STATEMENT
This nationally recognized program emphasizes informed, ethical decision making in the administration of higher education. It is intended to launch its graduates into new areas and/or higher levels of leadership. Viable applicants are expected to have a minimum of three years post-Master’s work experience in higher education. Students take core coursework in higher education foundations, administration, governance and organization, law, and the college student. Each student, in collaboration with her/his advisor, fashions a cognate that leads to specialization in an area of personal and professional interest. The sequence of four research courses culminates in a dissertation of original contribution to the knowledge of higher education. Based on a full-time cohort model, the program is designed to be completed in three years. All full-time students are employed in a variety of graduate assistantships that both support and supplement the program, and that include a waiver of all tuition and most fees. The Global Understanding Requirement broadens and diversifies the student’s conception of higher education and how it is influenced by culture and custom.
The program is grounded in the following values:
PROGRAM MISSION
(Incorporated above.)
PROGRAM UNIQUENESS
BGSU is fortunate to have eight full-time faculty whose positions are housed in the CSP and HIED programs. Drs. Broido, Coomes, Dannells, DeBard, Palmer, Stewart, Strange, and Wilson form the core of both programs' faculties and are accomplished teachers and researchers. Their offices are located in the main office of the CSP/HIED programs, and this greatly enhances the availability and involvement of faculty in the academic lives of students. They are also active in professional associations and provide service and scholarship to a national constituency.
In addition, each program draws upon the strengths and expertise of full-time faculty who are primarily housed in other programs and adjunct faculty. Please see the program websites for each program's faculty. Each program has a strong academic curriculum with flexibility to meet learner needs and an experiential component.
The Higher Education Administration Ph.D. program enjoys a strong national reputation which has been reflected in two recent studies of programs of its type. The 2000 National Doctoral Program Survey of current students and alumni, conducted by the National Association of Graduate-Professional Students, recorded a top score for the BGSU program. In another national survey, this one of the members of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, the BGSU program was ranked second. The HIED doctoral program is also distinguished by its Global Understanding requirement that assists students in developing a holistic and international perspective on higher education and has allowed students to pursue learning experiences at universities in countries such as Russia, England, Scotland, Australia, Bulgaria, Botswana, and Ghana.
