PROGRAM STATEMENT
The Higher Education Programs, College of Education and Human Development at the University of Maine offers a Doctor of Education in Higher Educational Leadership designed for the practicing professional in colleges and universities and a Master of Education in Student Development in Higher Education with concentrations in educational leadership, counselor education, women’s studies and adult education. These programs are designed to prepare or enhance skills of students for a variety of student affairs positions in post-secondary institutions.

Student Affairs is a field designed to prepare professionals to work in higher education with the skills, knowledge and attitude to promote and enhance the learning and development of college students. Student affairs units provide a variety of services that may include orientation, administration, registration, financial aid, residence life, recreation activities, student development, career placement, advising, learning support activities, Greek organizations, student activities, student programming, multicultural programming, GLBT programming, counseling and other related services.

PROGRAM MISSION
The student affairs concentration is designed to provide doctoral level students with both a rigorous academic background and a comprehensive experiential background. This is accomplished by a combination of classroom learning and practical experience via the practicum and internship assignments. in addition, there is a practical research component designed to provide for an application of research skills and student affairs theory to everyday student affairs problems.

Our programs strive to provide a grounding in the dynamics of diversity and the role of technology in contemporary higher education as foundations to the entire curriculum.

APPLICATION AND ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

Master's Application

  • Baccalaureate degree GPA: 3.0 or better
  • Either GRE or MAT scores required
  • 3 Letters of recommendation
  • Statement of purpose integrated in graduate school application
  • Rolling deadline with preference for those before January 15th for
    financial aid consideration

Doctorate Application

  • Masters degree with GPA of 3.0 or better
  • GRE scores
  • 3 Letters of recommendation
  • Personal Interview with Program Faculty
  • Leadership portfolio with current resume, writing samples, and case analysis demonstrating strong writing skills, an understanding of the higher ed context, and likelihood of professional success
  • Successful professional work experience in higher education
  • Rolling deadline with preference for those before April 1st.

(1) The Professional Core: a broad, common strand of course work required of all students (18 credit hours) including the following courses:
• HED 676/677 Doctoral Seminar in Higher Education (2 semesters)

• HED 652 Dynamics of Change in Higher Education
• HED 654 Higher Education Policy and Politics
• EDU 690 Topics: E.G. Advanced Leadership Studies

(2) Research Foundation: a set of courses to provide expertise in evaluating and conducting research in educational settings (a minimum of 12 credit hours to include

and at least one of the following:

(3) Professional specialization: a set of interdisciplinary courses tailored, to the individual professional goals, needs and interests (a minimum of 18 credit hours)

(4) An applied internship or field research, and

(5) dissertation research structured to solve problems or produce knowledge with direct applicability to higher educational practice (a minimum of 6 credit hours).
