PROGRAM STATEMENT
Seattle University’s master’s program is designed for those who want to work with college students outside of the formal classroom. Creative educators are needed in all post-secondary institutions throughout the United States and increasingly in other countries. Nationally recognized for its “education of the whole person,” this program fosters understanding student diversity, ethics and values, and the ability to adapt to specific educational environments.
PROGRAM MISSION
Seattle University’s program in Student Development Administration prepares students to meet the needs of changing student populations, develop techniques for fostering diversity in the college setting, and evaluate, develop and affirm individual leadership skills and values. It prepares students to serve as vice presidents or deans for student affairs and services, and as administrators for a wide range of departments: from admissions, career development, student housing, and academic advising, to financial aid, activities, sports, and advising international students and students of color.
PROGRAM UNIQUENESS
Through a combination of close connections with educators both on and off campus, course work, independent study, and clinical internships/assistantships designed to enhance ethical decision-making, research and inquiry skills, and opportunities to explore leadership for a just and humane world, the SDA program is preparing educators for a variety of roles at both two and four year colleges and universities. Seattle University is the largest independent university in the Pacific Northwest. Seattle University hosts a bright undergraduate student body comprising 45% students of color, from 47 states and 76 nations; thus, graduate students in the SDA program work with a diverse population of students. Located in the economic and cultural center of the Northwest, Seattle’s location enables it to offer internships at over 20 colleges and universities within easy communicating distance of the campus. In addition, students are eligible for a variety of assistantships, 80-90% of which are outside of residence life.
