PROGRAM STATEMENT
The Masters in Education with an emphasis in Postsecondary Education Leadership and a specialization in Leadership in Student Affairs/ Services curriculum at San Diego State University emphasizes student learning centeredness, integration of the curricular and co- curricular learning paradigms, and analysis, planning, and responsible practice of leaders in a socially just and global environment.

The program utilizes leadership theories to educate students in a manner that will allow them to become savvy consumers of research in order to apply ethical evidence-based decision making to promote access, equity, and quality student development and learning.

PROGRAM MISSION
Offered by the Department of Administration, Rehabilitation and Postsecondary Education, in collaboration with the Division of Student Affairs, the MA prepares students for effective administrative, practitioner, management and leadership positions in the higher education field of Student Affairs.

PROGRAM UNIQUENESS
The faculty of the Department of Administration, Rehabilitation and Postsecondary Education (ARPE), in collaboration with key personnel in Student Affairs and senior university administrators, has a rich array of experience, skills and knowledge. The expertise of faculty includes leadership, governance, student services, vocational education, community college issues, and issues related to individuals with disabilities. The faculty collaborates in program planning, and is actively involved in ongoing projects, research, writing, publications, grants, and local, national and international education efforts.

CURRICULUM INFORMATION

Program Required Hours:

Master's Curriculum
Core courses (6-9 units) include Educational Leadership, Introduction to Student Affairs, Theoretical Foundations of Student Affairs, Communication and Group Process, and a seminar on Critical Leadership Issues in Student Affairs.
 
Research courses (9 units) include a course on the procedures of conducting research, and two courses dedicated to a Student Affairs research program.
 
3 to 6 units of an applied internship
 
6 to 9 units of electives.
