PROGRAM STATEMENT
The Higher Education Administration and Student Personnel Ph.D. program at Kent State University is designed to prepare established professionals in higher education for senior-level administrative positions in colleges and universities.
PROGRAM MISSION
The mission of the Higher Education Administration and Student Personnel program at Kent State University is to prepare highly effective educators and leaders who possess the skills, competencies, and values required to meet the varied challenges facing two-year and four-year institutions and communities today, and to help shape our institutions in the future.
PROGRAM UNIQUENESS
Two things make Kent's PhD. program unique. The first
is the institutional diversity of Northeast Ohio. More than twenty colleges
and universities are within an hour's drive of Kent, and a great variety of
types of institutions require only a short trip for exploration. In this way,
students can experience first-hand environments such as a
comprehensive university
or college, community college, women's college, small private
liberal arts college,
religious institution, branch campus, art or music institute,
medical college,
corporate college, urban university, technical college,or research
university.
This provides a geographic advantage as students broaden their understanding
of higher education beyond the perspective of the current or past employing
college or university.
Second, the program provides students with an opportunity to
earn certificates in conjunction with the Ph.D. Currently, a certificate in
the Internationalization of Higher Education and a certificate in
College Teaching
are available.
Third is the sense of community in the program,
among students,
faculty, supervisors, alumni, and friends. The program has an
established network
of community members in Northeast Ohio, the state of Ohio, and, increasingly,
beyond. Doctoral students have contact with students in the master's program,
providing opportunities for mentoring, teaching, and networking with younger
or newer professionals.
Kent, Ohio, is a community of 29,000 located on the Cuyahoga
River. It provides the comfort, safety, and familiarity of a small town, yet
benefits from the amenities of the nearby cities of Akron and
Cleveland, which
provide world-class cultural events, museums, professional sports
teams, downtown
entertainment and dining, and shopping opportunities. Also in the
area are the
Cuyahoga National Recreation Area, Blossom Music Center, and many hiking and
biking trails.
