PROGRAM STATEMENT
Student Affairs in Higher Education (SAHE) is designed for students seeking a career in one of the variety of education and service areas constituting Student Affairs Administration. The two year, 45 semester credit hour program is open to a limited number of students annually. The program fosters the development of competencies focused on student affairs administration, student development/ learning theory, organizational management and change, human relations and the application of theory to practice.
In addition to courses in student affairs administration, students are required to take two functional related workshops and two practicum. They also take 12 hours of research and assessment credits.
A comprehensive portfolio project serves as the final culminating experience the summaries the accumulated progress students have accomplished toward attaining identified program related competencies.
PROGRAM MISSION
To prepare well rounded, competent entry level student affairs practitioners who can effectively apply student development, administrative and organizational management theory to practice.
PROGRAM UNIQUENESS
The SAHE program is based on a series of student affairs professional competencies that serve as the core for the integration of course work and a strong experiential component. While most students receive an assistantship, all students are required to participate in two practicum and to access the entire university as their laboratory. Student are admitted to the program from all regions of the United States, Canada and from a number of countries around the world.
Many of the faculty who teach and advise in the SAHE program also hold administrative positions in the Division of Student Affairs at Colorado State University and at the Front Range Community College. The chairof the program served as a Vice President of Student Affairs for over 22 years. Other School of Education faculty who teach in the program have also served as college vice presidents and senior educational administrators prior to assuming faculty roles. The faculty are strongly committed to integrating academic preparation with practical day to day experience. The final project for the 45 hour program consists of the development and presentation of a portfolio based on the student’s attained professional competencies over the two year program. Many Students elect to participate in international experiences or internships at other colleges and universities during the summer period between the two years. Placement of the program’s graduates approach 1! 00 each year.
