PROGRAM STATEMENT

The program is designed for individuals specifically interested in entering the field of student affairs administration in colleges and universities and in junior and community (two-year) colleges. It is designed to prepare individuals to work in areas such as admissions, financial aids, student activities and programs, housing and residence hall programs, and other positions of leadership in student affairs. It is based on the belief that the student affairs professional, in addition to being a specialist in any one of the personnel fields, must also be a generalist with respect to institutions as a whole. Curriculum is designed to provide each student with basic knowledge and understanding of higher education and the role of student affairs administration. The program is sponsored jointly by the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management and by the Department of Educational Studies in Teachers College.

PROGRAM MISSION

Basic to the program in Student Affairs Administration in Higher Education is the belief in the worth and the dignity of the individual. Student Affairs work is viewed as an agency of institutions of higher education, whose function is to help, improve and focus the college experience for the individual student according to his/her needs.

In order to fulfill this function, it is a further belief that the Student Affairs professional, in addition to being a specialist in any one of the personnel fields, must also be a generalist with respect to institutions as a whole. The program attempts to be interdisciplinary in nature. The curriculum is designed to provide each student with basic knowledge and understanding of higher education and the role of Student Affairs administration; it is designed to provide the student with opportunities to further understand the developmental needs of young adults; and it is designed to provide each student with opportunities to pursue areas of interest that he/she feels will contribute to his/her own personal and professional growth and development. The overall emphasis is on student development theory as well as practice.

PROGRAM UNIQUENESS

Our faculty, many of whom hold senior level administrative posts in the division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, enrich the learning experience for students.
